Considering cremation?

Discover why this natural memorial option is the fastest growing alternative to burial in California.

Never before has there been a way to give your entire family peace of mind while leaving the earth a better place than you found it. Discover why now is a smart time to learn about Better Place Forests, even if:

  • You don't plan on dying any time soon
  • You don't have a final will or estate planned
  • You think a beautiful memorial would be too expensive

Nobody is asking you to make a decision around your end of life plans. Instead, let’s explore the options available and why they matter.

Traditional funeral and memorial services are losing ground to
more affordable, natural, and
beautiful options.

End of life planning is a hard topic, but it's not your fault. The "death care" industry was built to profit at times when families are mourning.

At Better Place Forests, we're doing things differently — starting right here in Northern California. With the first memorial conservation forests now open in Santa Cruz and Point Arena, you can make a different choice. A beautiful choice.

What is Better Place Forests?

In a nutshell, Better Place Forests is a beautiful, sustainable, more affordable alternative to traditional cemeteries.

You choose your tree in one of our permanently protected redwood forests. Under this tree, you can spread ashes of family members and pets for generations to come. Pricing for a private tree starts at just $3,800. Flexible payment plans and more affordable options are also available.

The forest is managed and easily traversable. Redwoods, tanoaks, madrones, and more tower over you. You choose the tree that speaks to you. At the base of your tree is a permanent bronze memorial marker engraved with your family name.

"The process of selecting a tree was deeply spiritual as well as fun. I am a tree-hugging conservationist and Better Place Forests is exactly what I had in mind whenever I contemplated the disposition of my ashes. The ability to spread my pets' ashes in advance of my own gives me a real sense of connection with my tree and the whole forest, the whole earth really!"

“Out of the thousands of happy moments you have with someone you love, you will always remember the moment they died, the
moment you said goodbye surrounded by the friends and family that loved them at their memorial service, and the image of their final resting place.

That image will always be linked to your thoughts and memories of that person. It should be beautiful.”

— Sandy Gibson, CEO of Better Place Forests

What makes a "good" memorial?

Memorials are not new. In fact, they are an inseparable part of our human history. Evidence of burial rituals dates back more than 5,000 years — well before our written history.

In the modern era, you have dozens of memorial options. After surveying thousands of Americans, we can say with certainty that there are three key elements that are most important when making this decision.

Ranked by importance, Americans want a memorial that is:

• Beautiful

• Permanent

• Visitable

This isn't surprising. However, most Americans do not describe a typical cemetery as beautiful. The beauty that most people are seeking is something more natural.

Aside from a beautiful memorial being most important, Americans are overwhelmingly choosing cremation. In 2018, over 65% of Californians chose cremation over burial.

“This was an awesome experience! I had so much fun picking my tree. The forest is so peaceful. I will have a wonderful place to rest.”

— Andra C.

Creating a family legacy — even if your family isn't ready

Unlike traditional cemeteries with limited space and exponential costs for additional plots, Better Place Forests allows your family flexibility.

At any point in the future, family members who you authorize can join you at your tree. And because your tree will live for generation after generation, you can truly create a family tree.

We've combined all the most important elements of a memorial into a Better Place Forests Memorial

•A private tree in a permanently protected memorial forest

• A visitors center in the forest

• An engraved bronze memorial marker at the base of your tree with the inscription of your choice

• A digital memorial where you and your family can create and view photos, audio, video, and other information about your story

• Creating a legacy — we plant 25-400 impact trees in your name to reforest California depending on the tree size you select

Your Better Place Forests memorial includes:

When you choose your memorial tree with us, you also make an immediate impact on forest conservation.

Depending on the tree you select, we will plant up to 400 trees in fire and drought-affected areas of California through our partnership with the nonprofit One Tree Planted.
